"Running with the Residents"

New Members - 2009, October

Resident programs were running to keep up with the questions from over one hundred potential interns. Eighteen programs from all over Michigan and Ohio (and even John Hopkins in Maryland) were represented and fielded the inquiries of eager students - our largest crowd yet! The room was large and comfortable and the hot hors d'ouerves kept smiles on the many faces.

FROM THE BOARD
 NOVEMBER

Thanks, Again!

Almost a year ago, at the beginning of my term as your president, I asked each of you to give something a little bit more back to our profession. At September's meeting, some of you shared your contributions with us. Thank you.

Others contributed of their time and efforts, but chose not to speak out. Some may have been bashful, or merely considered their extra efforts as part of their job. No problem. The importance of your contribution is derived from your action and not the attention it receives. That's what giving is all about. Thank you.

Still others may have felt that their contributions were, to their minds, small and didn't merit mention. Please remember that the request was not for large investments of time, effort or money, but merely for just a little bit more than folks were already giving. Keep in mind that polio was defeated through the efforts of the March of Dimes. If not for those many people making small individual contributions (literally ten cents at a time), the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines would not have been developed. Thank you.

Included in those who did not speak out were the members of the SMSHP Board of Directors who worked hard throughout the year, going that extra mile, to ensure that our meetings and programs were of high quality and ran well, that bills were paid, newsletters went out, the web services expanded, and that new projects were developed and ongoing ones completed. Thank you.

Like many of you, I found that giving that little bit extra didn't cost much. It wasn't painful and it often provided a sense of fulfillment, when you knew you did the right thing. For example: A problem comes up at the end of the day, just when you're getting ready to head home (invariably on a Friday afternoon before your weekend off). You could ignore it, but you know that it needs to be handled now and that you're in the best position to take care of it. So you do - because that's what's best for your patient, co-workers, and profession (this is leading by example). Thank you.

I would also like to thank you for the honor of serving as your President this past year. It has been a very rewarding experience that I will always treasure. Finally, I'd like to ask one more favor of you. Please continue looking for ways to give that little bit extra back to our profession. As members of one of the oldest health-system pharmacy associations in the country and practitioners in one of the most progressive regions of pharmacy practice, we have a long-standing obligation to lead by example. I'm proud to say that because of your efforts and concerns, SMSHP takes this obligation seriously and acts on it regularly. Thank you,

- Frank

   NEW! SMSHP LOGO-WEAR!

SMSHP is excited to now offer the quintessential fashion item - shirts with the SMSHP logo! We are now offering three items: a T-shirt, hoodie and Golf / Polo shirt (in both men's and ladies styles).

SMSHP Hoodie

President Frank Zaran says, "Our logowear make such wonderful holiday gifts..... I mean what could be better than SMSHP T-shirts as Pharmacy Month gifts, Halloween treats, and stocking stuffers for Christmas? And one simply has to have a nice warm hooded sweatshirt for taking the kids around Trick or Treating and how better to give thanks (other than in prayer) for being in a profession that has protected us from much of the ongoing economic crisis - than by outfitting the entire family in SMSHP golf shirts when gathered around the table on Thanksgiving?"

These items can be ordered ONLINE! (click on this link, or on the LOGOWEAR item in the menu at the top of the page) An arrangement with PayPal has allowed us to make purchases securely. You do not have to have a PayPal account to use the service. You can use any credit card, deduct directly from your bank account or thru a PayPal account. The transaction is handled by PayPal, so SMSHP never needs your credit card information. Orders can be picked up at the next meeting (mailing is not available as yet). Please allow at least 7-10 days to process your order, as the shirts are made upon request and are not stocked in advance.

   NOVEMBER PROGRAM requires ONLINE registration

November marks SMSHP's Annual Awards & Installation Banquet. In addition our CE program is presented in conjunction with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) - our national "mother" organization. Guest speaker is LeAnne Kennedy, Pharm.D., BCOP, Pharmaceutical Care Coordinator, Hematology and Oncology, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, North Carolina. The program description is as follows:

Prevention and Treatment of an Oncologic Emergency: Focus on Tumor Lysis Syndrome

As a valued member of the health care team that manages the care of oncology patients, pharmacists are in a key position to impact the care of patients at risk for developing or those that present with oncologic emergencies, including Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS). TLS, a group of metabolic abnormalities resulting from the spontaneous or treatment-related rapid break down of malignant tumor cells, is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical emergency. When TLS occurs, it is essential that the patient receive prompt medical attention in order to prevent acute complications that can have severe repercussions, including death of the patient.

This program will help pharmacists appropriately identify patients who are at high risk of developing TLS. Monitoring and providing treatment options for patients who develop this medical emergency or those for whom prophylactic therapy is warranted will also be addressed. Case studies will be used to illustrate key concepts.

Please note that to recieve CE credit for this program attendees must follow two steps:
1) Register online at: http://ashpadvantage.com/tls/programs.html, (select the "Novi, MI" event) then,
2) after attending the program, print their official statements of continuing pharmacy education credit at the ASHP Learning Center at http://ce.ashp.org, immediately following this activity.

Pharmacy Technicians are also able to obtain CE credit for attending this program. A flyer with the complete information is now available and online here. A copy of the SMSHP newsletter is also available for download if you would like to post at your workplace or send to freinds.

For complete program information on the program or the speaker, please visit http://www.ashpadvantage.com/tls.
